I聽am an educator and researcher with聽primary interests in how聽critical and creative pedagogies聽can聽forward human and eco-centred聽conceptions of social justice.聽My areas of specialism聽are聽creativity聽in education,聽outdoor learning and sustainability,聽English聽and Drama.
At QMU I am Project Lead for the creation of the Outdoor Learning Hub. The hub will be a聽centre聽for learning, professional聽development聽and community activity. I co-lead the delivery of the Forest and Outdoor Learning Awards聽for education students and staff to develop their outdoor leadership skills. I am engaged in research towards a PhD by publication, that will focus on the importance of creative pedagogy in outdoor learning as enacted by leaders and practitioners.
Prior to joining QMU in 2020聽my path as an educator was聽winding and聽varied.聽I began my career as an English and Drama teacher,聽going on to聽manage teams聽in socially and ethnically diverse high schools in Scotland,聽America聽and England. During this time, I studied for a聽Masters in Educational Management聽and the Scottish Qualification for Headship.聽聽
In 2014 I changed my direction in education and set up聽social enterprise focused on creative learning.聽I trained as a聽Forest School leader and聽completed research towards an聽MScRes.聽 My dissertation was titled, 鈥楢 Good Stick: an inquiry into Creativity in Forest School鈥�.聽聽聽聽
I worked as a Further Education lecturer and initiated the Forest College at Newbattle Abbey College in Midlothian. In this role I developed and wrote the Forest and Outdoor Learning Awards聽and worked with a range of national and community partners to support lifelong learning outdoors.聽聽聽
